Measure the advance of spring and search for wildflowers while hiking the Gorge Trail high above the Genesee River in Letchworth State Park. Meet at the Upper St. Helena Picnic Area at 10:00 am on Thursday, May 4. Bring a lunch and water. Will car pool. (3 hours, 1 mile)

Search for resident birds as well as those passing through on migration along trails and old carraige roads in Letchworth State Park. Use ears and eyes to locate as many species as possible. Meet at the Portageville Entrance gate at 8:00 am on Sunday, May 7. Bring binoculars. (3 hours, 1 mile or more)

Join Master Fisherman George Dovolas at Silver Lake State Park Boat Launch at 9:00 am on Saturday, May 6 to learn all about catching fish at the lake. Bring your own tackle if you have it. George will discuss gear, lures, and technique. The boat launch is off West Lake Road. (3 hours)

Learn about the tiny, brightly colored songbirds known as warblers throughvideo and song. Meet in the Conference Room of the Visitor Center at Letchworth State Park at 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 6, to meet the twenty-five species that have nested in the park. (2 hours)

Explore the beautiful Upper and Middle Falls area at Letchworth State Park to enjoy the spring wildflowers. Learn why flowers are fewer tham formerly. Meet at the museum at 1:00 pm on Sunday, May 7. A hand lens will be useful, but there will be some to share. (3 hours, 1 mile)

Follow the border of Letchworth State Park cross-country off trail with a naturalist guide. Expect mud, steep hills, stream crossings, prickers and poison ivy. See parts of the park that few have visited. Meet at the junction of Pennycook Road and State Route 436 (1/4 mile east of Parade Grounds Entrance)at 10:00 am on Thursday, May 11. Bring lunch and water. Will car pool. (4 hours, 2 miles)

Supporters of The Genesee Naturalist and park volunteers are invited to join for a luncheon at the Glen Iris on Saturday, May 13. We will pay our own way and order from the menue. Lunch will be from 11:30 until about 1:00. We will meet at 1:30 to car pool and take short walks to visit special park places. Make reservations to Doug Bassett at 585-493-3625 by Monday, May 8.

Supporters of The Genesee Naturalist and park volunteers are invited to Join Naturalist Doug Bassett on an exploration of special places in Letchworth State Park entitled "Rocks, Birds and Flowers" on May 13 at 1:30 pm. We will meet at the Museum following the Supporters Luncheon and combine car pooling and short walks. (2 hours)

Try to find owls in the mysterious twilight hours at Letchworth State Park. Use tape recordings of owl calls to lure the birds close enough to see. Meet at Trailside Lodge at 7:00 pm on Saturday, May 13. Bring a flashlight. (2 hours, 1 mile)

Seek out spring blossoms in the woodlands of Letchworth State Park. Meet at 1:00 pm at the Parade Grounds (off of Route 436 on the east side of the park)on Sunday, May 14. Bring wildflower books and a hand lens. Will car pool. (3 hours, 1 mile)

Civil War Encampment, Living History and Battle Re-enactments featuring Union and Confederate and Civilian participants. Camps open 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Battles at 2:00 PM, Highbanks Recreation Area.

Re-enacters portray Civil War combatants and families in authentic camps and battle recreations. Camps open from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. Battle at 2:00 pm. Highbanks Recreation Area, Letchworth State Park.Saturday, May 20 and Sunday, May 21.

Meet at the Castile Entrance of Letchworth State Park at 10:00 am on Saturday, may 20 to help clean and mark trails in the park. Bring hand tools, gloves. (2 to 3 hours)

Join us for the rededication and Grand reopening of the William Pryor Letchworth Museum. Be one of the first to experince some never before exhibited artifacts. Ceremonies begin at 1:00 PM. Public invited to tour the museum beginning at 4:00 PM.

Meet in the Museum area of Letchworth State Park on Friday, May 26 at 1:00 pm to view the ceremonies kicking off the two year centennial celebration. Museum will be open to the public at 4:00 pm.

Learn how the Letchworth Canyon was created and how waterfalls change! Visit an old growth grove with trees 400 years old! Meet at 10:00 am in the parking lot past cabin area "B" down the Lower Falls Road in Letchworth State Park on Monday, May 29. Lots of stairs and potential for mud. (2 hours, 1 mile)

William Pryor Letchworth planted trees to mark special occassions and some of them still survive. Meet some of these living history reminders on a short walk around the Glen Iris in Letchworth State Park. Meet at the Museum at 2:00 pm on Monday, May 29. (2 hours, 1 mile)

School groups are encouraged to attend this one. The General public is also welcome. An outdoor celebration with 10 stations to visit, each station will have a differant topic of discussion. Topics include flintknapping, civil war camp life, wool spinning, listen and watch a portrayal of Mr. Letchworth and Caroline Bishop. Cake will be available. Call 585-493-3616 for more information. Celebrate the 183rd birthday of William Pryor Letchworth with children from area schools. a 1/2 mile loop featuring 10 stations, each with a 15 minute presentation on some aspect of Letchworth's life or interests including a chance to meet Mr. Letchworth and his loyal secretary, Caroline Bishop will be followed by birthday cake! Meet in the museum area of Letchworth State Park at 9:00 am on Wednesday, May 31. Public Welcome! (4 hours)

Hike off trail in Letchworth State Park tracing the park's unmarked boundary with an expert guide. Encounter brush, stream crossings, steep hills and what ever else nature may offer. Dress for the weather and bring lunch and water. Meet at the Castile Entrance at 10:00 am on Thursday, June 1. Will car pool. (4 hours, 2 miles)

Meet at the Castile Entrance to Letchworth State Park at 10:00 am on Saturday, June 3 and spend a couple of hours helping clean up and mark park trails. Entrance fee waived for volunteers. Bring hand tools (pruners, grass whips, bow saws) and work gloves. (2 hours, 1/2 to 1 mile)

Carnival style event featuring games, activities, educational workshops, free fishing ( no license required ) , free lunch and door prizes. Presented in conjunction with DEC and Cornell Cooperative Extension. Noon to 6:00 PM at Trailside Lodge.
